COOL

Walk early, late or not at all

The RSPCA recommends early-morning or late-evening walks in warm weather and warns that energetic exercise can cause dangerous overheating. On very hot days, quiet enrichment at home may be safer than a walk.

Flat-faced dogs, older dogs, overweight dogs and those with heart or breathing conditions can be at greater risk even in milder heat.RSPCA summer guidance↗
PAWS

Choose shade and cooler ground

Grass and shaded woodland are generally kinder than sun-baked promenades. Test hard ground with the back of your hand and change the plan if it is uncomfortably hot.

BEACH

Know the summer beach rules

Seasonal restrictions apply from 1 May to 30 September on specified Torbay beaches. Year-round starting points include Babbacombe, Anstey’s Cove, Goodrington North, Fairy Cove, Fishcombe Cove, Saltern Cove and Shoalstone.

PLAN

Make the day easy to shorten

Pair one gentle outing with a dog-friendly food stop rather than filling every hour. Confirm shade and indoor access before visiting, and never leave a dog in a parked car while you enter a non-dog-friendly venue.

If a dog shows heavy panting, breathing difficulty, excessive drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting or collapse, stop and seek urgent veterinary advice.Find indoor options↗

Good to know

Common questions.

When are dogs restricted on Torbay beaches?+

Restrictions apply from 1 May through 30 September on specified beaches. Other beaches or defined sections welcome dogs year round. Check Torbay Council’s current guidance and every on-site sign.

Is an evening walk always safe in hot weather?+

Not necessarily. Heat and humidity can remain high after sunset. Check the conditions, consider your dog’s health and breed, and skip exercise if it is still too warm.

What are warning signs of overheating?+

Heavy panting, difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, lethargy, poor coordination, vomiting or collapse require immediate action. Move the dog to a cool place, begin appropriate cooling and contact a vet urgently.

Can I leave my dog in the car for a few minutes?+

No. Cars can become dangerously hot very quickly, even with windows open or when the weather feels mild. Choose dog-friendly stops or arrange suitable care instead.
